Overview table description and comments

We only took WCAG tests on level A and AA.

  • High occurance of WCAG 4.1.2 (Name, Role and Value) is probably caused by our sampling strategy that included quite a lot of forms, as forms use to add a lot of complexity.
  • 1.4.3 Contrast (minumum) adheres to general consent based on WebAIM's yearly reviews and also the usage of automatic tools that are pretty effective when detecting this specific result.
  • 2.4.4 Link purpose (In context) reveals that there are a lot of links that include same text. Try to imagine standard "Read more" link being used for different locations.
  • 1.1.1 is the standard missing alternative texts issue, most commonly found on images missing alt attribute. Also quite a standard error but seems like Search Engine Optimization strategies help to promote it's usage.

New info will be added sequentially, so please do come back and check for the news.

Introduction and motivation

Global Accessibility Awareness Day just rounded ten years of it's existence and I've wanted to add my share to the accessibility awareness of my motherland - Slovenia. As I try to focus more on web accessibility in my life I wanted to investigate the state of web accessibility on a scale.

It is a known fact that Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) with it's success criteria offer the best methodologies to evaluate basic accessibility known today, but at the same time only a part of them can be tested with automatic tools. It is nevertheless possible to catch some technical barriers that can indicate online barriers, so it is still worth investing in automatic auditing, especially on a large scale.

My main inspiration was the WebAIM's Million pages accessibility audit and I wanted to do something similar on webpages that have some impact for Slovenia. Therefore I manually selected 1311 webpages from different sectors and categories and audited their accessibility and other related metrics.

Final results allow us to get a partial overview on the state of web accessibility for the pages with potentially big impact for the population.

Scope definition - how did I choose the webpages that are included in the test

I was not able to find a dataset with thousands of most visited web pages in Slovenia, so I had to rely on different public lists and different search engine results. Quite a lot of manual work but I was able to collect 1311 webpages that cover quite wide spectrum.

Besides searching manually and using public registries I also used some online lists and resources:
